Physics from the bottom up, one atom at a time

March 7, 2023

Experimental quantum science has seen major advances in just the last decade. Here I will give a broad overview of the current state-of-the-field of using quantum devices to perform computation and simulation, before diving into one platform in particular: individual atoms held in optical tweezers (a dynamically reconfigurable crystal of light). I will discuss how arrays of single atoms are trapped, cooled, imaged, sorted, and entangled, drawing on a number of examples and experiments from the last few years. Finally, I will present a glimpse of the future, and in particular discuss the imminent onset of quantum advantage in such systems.
